2022: Auf einmal kam alles in Gang. Gleich drei Einzelausstellungen und die Veröffentlichung meines neuen Buches „Places of Resonance“ ballten sich in der zweiten Jahreshälfte. Vieles galt es vorzubereiten: Daten für den Buchdruck aufbereiten, Motive für die Ausstellung planen, Rahmen bestellen, viele Stunden im Labor printen, Texte schreiben, Einladungen versenden. Parallel dazu arbeitete ich intensiv an einem Forschungsprojekt über Gustave Le Gray für das Amsterdamer Rijksmuseum. Vor lauter Präsentieren war kaum Zeit mit der Kamera aktiv zu sein.

Endlich ging es im Oktober für zwei Wochen an Nord- und Ostsee. Auf die Jagd nach Wolken und Meer. Für die Forschung über die Seestücke von Le Gray. Mit vielversprechenden Ergebnissen kam ich zurück. Dann ging alles schief. Die großformatigen Glasplatten-Negative ließen sich nicht für das Printen aufbereiten. Das war mir noch nie passiert. Nach zwei schweißtreibenden und verzweiflungsträchtigen Wochen blieb genau ein Wolken-Negativ übrig. Dann zerbrach der Himmel in Form dieses so wertvollen Negativs. Tiefe Demut stellte sich ein.

Manchmal liegt die Schönheit im Detail. So wie auch bei diesem Print: Der unversehrte Teil des gebrochenen Negativs.

2022: Everything suddenly got going. Three solo exhibitions and the publication of my new book ‘Places of Resonance’ came together in the second half of the year. There was a lot to prepare: Data for book printing, planning motifs for the exhibition, ordering frames, many hours of printing in the lab, writing texts, sending out invitations. At the same time, I was working intensively on a research project on Gustave Le Gray for the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. There was hardly any time to be active with the camera because of all the presentations.

Finally, in October, I travelled to the North and Baltic Seas for a fortnight. On the hunt for clouds and the sea. To research Le Gray’s seascapes. I came back with promising results. Then everything went wrong. The large-format glass plate negatives could not be prepared for printing. That had never happened to me before. After two sweaty and desperate weeks, exactly one cloud negative remained. Then the sky broke in the form of this precious negative. Deep humility set in.
